The oil industry did not create the Great Pacific plastic patch, but our consumption habits and our governments' inability/willingness to address plastic waste. The oil industry did not destroy the Amazon rain forest ģ.The oil industry did not force governments to build flats and houses that are/were highly dependent on coal-burning power stations or heating oil. There is time to drop the double standards and sheer hypocrisy of the climate naysayers and activists alike, and look at this tipping point of our century in a constructive and, hopefully, collaborative way because: Should I also mention that in many rural areas of the UK there are NO other sources of heating other than fuel oil? guess what? They can't run on air, can they? And for many climate activists this passes unnoticed because, of course, Tesla manufactures electric cars!Īnd, if one of the many storms that devastate the coastal areas of the US every summer takes out the power lines while one of our beloved family members is in the operating theatre waiting for a heart transplant, the doctors should simply let them die because the hospital generators run on fuel, thus they shouldn't kick in.Īnd someone who is unemployed and uses a food bank should simply become homeless because they can't afford solar panels and underground heat pumps (let alone a wind turbine) to power their flat/house, to keep warm in winter and have the occasional shower. I'm a realist almost every single thing in our lives is based on petroleum: from the clothes we wear and the furniture and paint we use in our homes (let alone our transport), to the medicines we take and the agricultural machinery that farms the land.Įven NASA's space exploration missions could not happen without technology borrowed from the oil industry - and not many people know this, because it is not something to 'be proud of' in 2022.Įlon Musk's SpaceX rockets are fuelled by. I am not a supporter, nor a detractor of the oil and gas industry. I've seen a lot, and I learnt a hell of a lot.Īlong the way, I've met some extraordinary people: both as humans, as well as professionals, and they are too many to mention here however, there are some who deserve a special shout out: Vince Pizzoni FIChE CEng FCMI AFWES FEI MIET MREI MSPE, Eve Sprunt, Leigh-Ann Russell, Susan Mackenzie, David Pritchard, Lillian Espinoza-Gala, Loren Steffy Les Linklater, Anthony Onukwu, Maria Trujillo Vergara and Mohamed Zahran. With the exception of the past two years, I've been working in the energy industry (oil and gas, hydropower, international development, energy membership bodies and government authorities) for 20 years. Let us have an honest talk about the oil industry and climate activists.
